1522‐60 A French Renaissance poet. Born into a minor noble family in the Anjou region. He studied at Poitiers in 1544 and discovered his love of poetry. In 1546 he met his ally Ronsard, who recommended him to enter the Coclés School in Paris the following year. In 1549 he published a prose treatise entitled "The Defense and Exaltation of the French Language," which represented the views of a group of people who shared a common new literary theory and would later be named the Pléade School. In other words, he argued that French should naturally be used as a means of literary expression, but in order to do so, the content should be enriched by following the example of ancient and Italian literature, and that one should make an effort to introduce new words, introduce new poetic forms, and innovate rhetorically, while composing with pride and awareness.
