A French Renaissance poet. Born into a minor noble family in the Anjou region. He studied at Poitiers in 1544 and discovered his love of poetry. In 1546 he met his ally Ronsard, who recommended him to enter the Coclés School in Paris the following year. In 1549 he published a prose treatise entitled "The Defense and Exaltation of the French Language," which represented the views of a group of people who shared a common new literary theory and would later be named the Pléade School. In other words, he argued that French should naturally be used as a means of literary expression, but in order to do so, the content should be enriched by following the example of ancient and Italian literature, and that one should make an effort to introduce new words, introduce new poetic forms, and innovate rhetorically, while composing with pride and awareness.

フランス，ルネサンス期の詩人。アンジュー地方の小貴族の家に生まれる。1544年ポアティエに学び詩作に目覚め，46年盟友ロンサールと出あいその推薦によって翌年パリのコクレ学寮にはいる。49年散文の論説《フランス語の擁護と顕揚》を発表したが，これはのちに〈プレイヤード派〉と名付けられる，共通の新しい文芸理論を抱くグループの意見を代表するものであった。すなわち，フランス語は文学表現の手段として用いられて当然であるが，そのためには古代文芸，イタリア文学にならって内容を充実すべきであり，新語の導入，新詩型の移入，修辞の工夫等に努力を払いつつ誇りと自覚をもって創作をおこなうことを説く。
