...This trend appeared in the third stage of Catholic parties, when Catholic parties assumed the character of conservative parties and were supported by non-believers in the real sense, as well as Protestants. In the mid-1980s, the Christian Democratic Social Union of West Germany and the Christian Democratic Party of Italy, Democrazia Cristiana, doubled their vote share compared to prewar Catholic parties, and this was also due to the support of such non-believers. The relationship between Catholic parties and Catholics is also weakening in these two senses.
