Conjuratio

...It is also important to note that the merchants from distant areas, along with all the small traders and craftsmen who had previously made a living in a subordinate relationship to the city lords, formed a citizen's association in rebellion against the feudal power. This union of the entire citizenry was called a "conjuratio" in the language of the time, and as a result, the emperor, king, or feudal lords were forced to recognize the self-government of the citizen association as a whole. This movement is collectively called the commune movement.
