A method of constructing undersea tunnels. It is a prefabricated method in which huge concrete boxes are lined up on the seabed to create an undersea tunnel, and is used when the ground is weak and it is difficult to dig a large-diameter tunnel. It has been adopted in the United States, the Netherlands, and Japan (Tokyo Port Tunnel). It is used in two places: the mouth of the Tama River on the Tokyo Wangan Expressway and the entrance and exit to Kawasaki Port. After a block 10m high, 40m wide, 130m long, and weighing 52,000t is completed in the dock, the entrance and exit are closed with iron doors, and it is towed by a tugboat to the site about 20m deep, where it is connected to a six-lane road and evacuation passages.
