...A sudden bright explosion on the surface of the sun, i.e., a flare, occurs, and immediately afterwards the intensity of shortwave radio waves propagating through the ionosphere in the sunlit hemisphere on Earth suddenly weakens, and in extreme cases, radio waves cannot be received. It is named after its discoverer, John Howard Dellinger (1886-1964).
