...A sudden bright explosion on the surface of the sun, i.e., a flare, occurs, and immediately afterwards the intensity of shortwave radio waves propagating through the ionosphere in the sunlit hemisphere on Earth suddenly weakens, and in extreme cases, radio waves cannot be received. It is named after its discoverer, John Howard Dellinger (1886-1964). The large amount of X-rays emitted by a flare reaches the Earth about 8 minutes later, ionizing the atmosphere in the lower part of the ionosphere (D, E regions) in the sunlit hemisphere abnormally strongly, causing a sudden increase in electron density there. ...
