Clover (English spelling) Kroeber, Alfred Louis
Born June 11, 1876 in Hoboken, New Jersey.
[Died] October 5, 1960. American cultural anthropologist in Paris. Famous for his research on the religious rites of California Indians. Professor of anthropology at the University of California from 1901 to 1946. After retiring, he taught at the University of Chicago, Columbia University, Yale University, and other universities. He considered cultural phenomena to belong to a separate realm from organisms, and sought to discover their types, laying the foundation for historicism in American anthropology (→ cultural determinism). His major works include Anthropology (1923), Handbook of Indians of California (25), The Nature of Culture (52), etc.
