Spanish literary critic and literary historian. He studied philosophy and literature under Mira i Fontanales at the University of Barcelona, and in 1878, at the exceptionally young age of 22, he became professor of literary history at the University of Madrid, and in 1898 was appointed director of the National Library. The roots of his intellectual activities, which led to his diverse and vast writings, were his knowledge of the classics and his keen intuition for aesthetic value, but even more importantly, his fervent patriotic spirit and Catholic faith, which supported him in his historical reevaluation of Spanish culture as a whole.
