...On the other hand, another meaning of fire festivals is fertility rituals that seek the fertility power of the sun. In Alsace, the Schiweschlawe, which is held on the first Sunday of Lent to pray for a good harvest of grapes and other crops, players play games in which a ring of fire, which symbolizes the sun, is rolled and a flaming discus is thrown. It is thought that these events originate from a custom that existed before the spread of Christianity, in which the movement of a ring of fire was used to predict the size of the harvest.
