Chirigumo - Chirigumo

This spider belongs to the Arthropoda phylum, Arachnidae family, and Araneidae order. It is about 2.5 mm long and builds a white, flat, curtain-like web 4 to 5 mm in diameter at the edges of ceiling battens and the joints of boards, and hides inside it, but it often crawls out and walks around the room. When it finds prey, it circles around it and wraps it tightly in its silk. It is distributed widely around the world, and in Japan it can be found inside houses in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and the Nansei Islands, but is not found in the northern or central parts of Honshu. It is sometimes treated as part of the Pycnonotidae family because of its similar shape to the flat spider.

節足動物門クモ形綱真正クモ目チリグモ科に属するクモ。体長2.5ミリメートルほどで、天井の桟のきわ、板の継ぎ目などに直径4、5ミリメートルの白色で扁平(へんぺい)の幕のような網をつくってその中に潜むが、はい出して室内を歩行することも多い。獲物をみつけると、その周りを回りながら糸でぐるぐる巻き付ける。世界に広く分布し、日本では、本州、四国、九州、南西諸島の家屋内にみられるが、本州では北部や中部にはいない。ヒラタグモと形が似ているので、ヒラタグモ科として扱われることもある。
