According to legend, this was a curse caused by a French diamond merchant, J.B. Tavernier (1605-89), who stole diamonds from the eyes of a statue of Ramasita in an Indian temple around 1668. The world's largest diamond, the Cullinan from South Africa, is said to have had a rough stone weighing 3,106 carats, and is now divided into several pieces that are used to decorate the crowns and sceptres of the British royal family.
