Born: July 23, 1889, Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka [Died] July 12, 1974. Paris. A Russian-born painter. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, he studied in Paris. During the period surrounding the Russian Revolution, he participated in the Russian avant-garde art movement as a Cubist painter, and formed friendships with contemporary poets, novelists, and theater people. He created his own unique genre, drawing portraits of B. Pasternak, V. Mayakovsky, and other artists, as well as illustrations for books. His illustrations for A. Blok's epic poem "Dvenadtsat' (1918) are immortal masterpieces. He went into exile in 1924 and lived in Germany and Paris. He left behind memoirs about the Russian writers with whom he was friends.
