Ramakian

Japanese: ラーマキエン（英語表記）Ramakian

This is the Thai version of the great Indian epic poem Ramayana, which has been widely loved by people in Southeast Asia since ancient times. Ramakien means "the glory of Rama." This story was already known during the Sukhothai period (13th to 15th centuries), and the name of the king was often added to the name of the king. There are versions by King Taksin, Rama I, Rama II, Rama IV, Rama V, and Rama VI, but the most outstanding of these is the one (117 volumes of manuals, about 67,000 lines) that was compiled by Rama I in 1793 with the help of poets and scholars. It is one of the longest masterpieces in the history of classical literature, written in the form of kln verse for a song drama, khon (masked drama).

古来東南アジアの人々に広く親しまれているインドの大叙事詩《ラーマーヤナ》のタイ語版。ラーマキエンとは〈ラーマの栄光〉の意。この物語はスコータイ朝時代(13～15世紀)すでに知られていて，王名にもしばしばラーマの名が付加されてきた。タークシン王本，ラーマ1世本，同2世本，同4世本，同5世本，同6世本があるが，中でもラーマ1世が1793年から詩人学者を集めてつくったもの(手冊本117巻，約6万7000行)が傑出しており，歌唱劇，コーン(仮面黙劇)のためにクローン(kln)詩の形式で書かれた古典文学史上最長の傑作の一つである。
