Honjo Shigenaga

Japanese:
Honjo Shigenaga

A military commander from the Sengoku period to the early Edo period. Yajiro. Echizen no Kami. The eldest son of Honjo Fusanaga, the lord of Honjo, Koizumi-sho, Iwafune-gun, Echigo Province (present-day Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture). In 1551 (Tenbun 20), he recovered Honjo Castle (Murakami Castle), which had been taken by his uncle Ogawa Nagasuke, and became the lord of Honjo. In 1563 (Eiroku 6), he joined Uesugi Kenshin and participated in the Kanto campaign, achieving military success, but in 1568 he allied with Takeda Shingen, leading to an attack by Kenshin and a conflict. In the Otate War after Kenshin's death, he sided with Uesugi Kagekatsu, and even under Kagekatsu, he maintained the greatest power in Kaetsu. He was in conflict with Mogami Yoshiaki, who was trying to expand into the Shonai region, but in 1589 (Tensho 17) Toyotomi Hideyoshi ruled over Shonai, officially recognizing Shigenaga's rule. However, the following year Hideyoshi ordered Kagekatsu to punish Shonai. When the Dewa Senboku Rebellion broke out in 1591, Shigenaga was suspected of plotting an uprising and was stripped of his title and placed under house arrest in Yamato. In 1592 (Bunroku 1), he was pardoned and took part in the invasion of Korea, once again serving Kagekatsu. When Hideyoshi transferred Kagekatsu to Aizu in 1598 (Keicho 3), he followed suit and became the lord of Moriyama Castle in Tamura County, Mutsu, and was given a stipend of 10,000 koku. In the Battle of Aizuguchi, a prelude to the Battle of Sekigahara, he harassed the Tokugawa Date clan as the lord of Fukushima Castle in Shinobu County, but after the war, when Kagekatsu was transferred to Yonezawa, Shigenaga's territory was reduced to one third. He died at Fukushima Castle in 1615, at the age of 74. The documents handed down through the Honjo family are held by the Hokkaido Prefectural Archives.
