Geopolitics

This term was coined by Swedish political scientist Rudolf Kjellén (1864-1922) just before World War I. Whereas political geography studies global political phenomena statically, geopolitics grasps them dynamically, and links its theory to national security and foreign policy from the perspective of power politics. It was German military officer K. Haushofer who perfected geopolitics. He became associated with Hitler's Nazi Party, and geopolitics became a propaganda tool that advocated Germanic racial supremacy and Lebensraum (living space) for national self-sufficiency as the basis of the Third Reich's territorial expansion policy. However, a new geopolitics is needed today to explain the North-South problem, etc.

スウェーデンの政治学者チェレーンRudolf Kjellén（1864―1922）によって第一次世界大戦直前につくられた用語で、政治地理学が世界の政治現象を静態的に研究するのに対し、地政学はこれを動態的に把握し、権力政治の観点にたって、その理論を国家の安全保障および外交政策と結び付ける。地政学を大成したのはドイツの軍人K・ハウスホーファーであった。彼はヒトラーのナチス党と結び付き、地政学は、第三帝国の領土拡大政策の基礎としてゲルマン民族至上主義と民族自給のための「生活圏」Lebensraumを主張するプロパガンダの手段と化した。しかし今日では南北問題の解明などのために新たな地政学が必要とされよう。
