Choreometrics

...This was a cross-cultural comparison of the characteristics of recorded folk songs, such as the shape of melodic lines, the length of phrases, volume, tone, vocalization and pronunciation characteristics, and more than 30 other stylistic features of musical structure. The conclusion was that the style of folk songs is closely correlated with the characteristics of the social structure of the culture that produced them, and that the geographical distribution of singing styles traces the tracks of past ethnic migrations and clearly depicts the historical distribution of cultures ("Folk Song Style and Culture" 1968). Lomax and his research group also attempted a similar approach with dance, publishing a paper titled "Choreometrics: A method for studying cross-cultural types (of dance) through video in 1969, and producing a film of the same name.
