A former town in Ihara County facing Suruga Bay in the central-eastern part of Shizuoka Prefecture. The city center was a former post town on the Tokaido line and is served by the Tokaido Main Line. There is an aluminum smelting plant, and food processing and chemical industries are also carried out here. Mandarin oranges and cherry shrimp are produced here.
