Japanese: 光度関数 - こうどかんすう（英語表記）luminosity function

Let f ( M ) dM be the number of celestial objects in a unit volume of space whose absolute luminosity is between M and M + dM . In this case, f ( M ) is called the luminosity function. The luminosity functions of open clusters and globular clusters are used when studying the mechanism by which stars are born in the Milky Way, and the luminosity function of stars in the general star fields of the Milky Way is used to estimate the spatial density distribution of stars in the Milky Way. The luminosity function of galaxies in galaxy clusters is useful when studying the mechanism by which galaxies are formed.

宇宙空間の単位体積に存在する天体について，その絶対光度等級がMとM＋dMとの間にある天体の数をf(M)dMとする。この場合にf(M)を光度関数という。散開星団や球状星団の光度関数は，銀河系空間で恒星が生まれる機構について研究するときに用いられ，銀河系の一般星野の恒星の光度関数は，恒星の銀河系空間における空間密度分布を推定する際に用いられる。銀河団の銀河の光度関数は，銀河の生成の機構を研究する際に有用である。
