〘Noun〙 A nun who sings Buddhist chants. This was popular in the Middle Ages and continued into the early modern period. Examples include the Kanjin Bikuni, who explained pictures of hell and paradise, the Ekai Bikuni, and the Kumano Bikuni, who told the legend of Kumano Gongen and handed out Go-o talismans. Later, they began to sell their services by singing popular songs and wearing light makeup. Eki Bikuni . 〘名〙 歌念仏を歌う尼。中世に流行し、近世まで続いた。地獄、極楽の絵解きをした勧進比丘尼、絵解比丘尼、熊野権現の縁起を語って牛王(ごおう)のお札を配った熊野比丘尼などがある。のちには、流行の歌をうたい薄化粧をして色を売るようになった。絵解比丘尼(えときびくに)。油引かず。※浮世草子・好色一代女(1686)三「其人にぬれ袖の哥(ウタ)びくに迚(とて)、此津に入みだれての姿舟」
