The greater flamingo, Phoenicopterus ruber (illustration), is the largest species and breeds in southern Europe, Africa, the Caspian Sea coast, northwestern India, and the Caribbean coast. The Chilean flamingo, P. chilensis , is similar to the greater flamingo but a little smaller.
