Novelist. Born on October 26, 1913 in Ikutamae-cho, Chuo-ku, Osaka. The eldest son of his father Tsuruyoshi and mother Takae. Due to certain circumstances, he was listed on the family register of his mother's older brother, Suzuki Yasutaro. Later, when his parents registered their marriage and his father registered recognition, his surname was changed to Oda. The family business was fresh fish sales. In 1931 (Showa 6), he graduated from Takatsu Middle School and entered the former Third High School. In 1933, he published his first play, Ochiru (Falling). In 1935, he founded the coterie magazine Umikaze (Sea Breeze). In 1936, he dropped out of Third High School. In 1938, he published his first novel, Hitori Sumau (Living Alone). His work Rain (1938) caught the attention of Takeda Rintaro. In 1939, he married Miyata Kazue. In 1940, his novel Zokushu (Zokushu) (1939) was nominated for the Akutagawa Prize, and his novel Meoto Zenzai (Married Couple Pleasures) (1940) won the Kaizosha Literary Recommendation Award in its first competition, establishing him as a rising star. In 1941, he published The Paradox of Youth, but it was banned. His Doubutsu (Collection of Animals) (1941) was praised by Masamune Hakucho. From 1942, he published a series of historical novels, as well as the elegant masterpiece Ki no Miyako (The City of Trees) (1944). In 1944, he lost Kazue. After the Second World War, in 1946 (Showa 21), he published a series of controversial works, including "Rokupaku Kinsei," "Ad Balloon," "Social Condition," and "Keiba," earning him the reputation of being a popular author, and went on to publish the full-length novels "Noctiluca" and "Saturday Wife." Immediately after publishing "Literature of Possibilities," a critique that transcended traditional literature, he coughed up blood and died on January 10, 1947 (Showa 22). He is buried at Ryogonji Temple in Osaka.
