…The most talented, Cornelius (1783-1867), compensated for the rigidity caused by imitation with a monumental and powerful style, but at the same time the original simple and intimate piety was diluted. The Nazarene school, which transformed into a style of historical and religious painting, spread throughout Germany as a new academicism starting with Cornelius' invitation to Munich in 1824. In particular, the Düsseldorfer Molerschule, led by Wilhelm von Schadow (1788-1862), painted large-scale paintings mainly of German legends and religious themes in a completely realistic style, which took the world by storm. In England, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood arose in imitation of the Nazarene school. …
