In response, in September 1836, a radical group (the September Party), mainly composed of industrialists, craftsmen, and small merchants, started a revolution demanding protective tariffs for domestic industries and restoring the 1822 Constitution. In 1842, Antonio Bernardo da Costa Cabral (1803-1889) of the Charter Party came to power, but his modernization policies provoked a backlash from the conservative northern peasants, and in 1846, a rare popular uprising in Portugal, known as the Maria da Fonte Rebellion, took place.
