Lacquer paper documents

Japanese:
Lacquer paper documents
This is a document that remains underground after the paper has hardened with lacquer and turned into leather. This paper is a scrap of local government documents that was used as a lid for containers to prevent the lacquer used for adhesion and decoration from drying out and hardening, so it is considered to be as valuable as a wooden tablet. Even if the hardened paper makes the characters invisible to the naked eye, the characters can be clearly seen when viewed through infrared light. The first paper was discovered in 1978 at the Taga Castle ruins in Miyagi Prefecture, and since then, it has been discovered at Isawa Castle ruins, Akita Castle ruins, Kanoko C ruins, Nagaokakyo ruins, Yoshida Minami ruins, and other government office ruins around the country. The oldest known document is a tax return book with the date "Tenpyo 14th year (742)" written on it, excavated from the Kanoko C ruins, and most of the papers are from the latter half of the Nara period. Many new types of documents and new facts have been discovered that were previously unknown in historical documents.
