Civil engineering is the engineering of agricultural land and labor to increase the productivity and conservation of agricultural land. In other words, it is the use of civil engineering to permanently increase the value of cultivated and uncultivated land, and includes land improvement such as reclamation, irrigation, drainage, and soil layer improvement such as compaction and top dressing. The scope of agricultural civil engineering is wide, including the development and conservation of agricultural water, the development, improvement and conservation of farmland, and rural development, and it has been carried out since the dawn of history. The first university course in agricultural civil engineering was established in 1876 at the University of Bonn in Germany, and was founded by FW Dünkelberg. 農業の土地および労働の生産性を高め,農用地の保全上の能力を高めるための土木をいう。すなわち,土木的手段を用いて既耕地および未耕地の土地の利用価値を永続的に高めるもので,開墾,干拓,灌漑,排水,床締めや客土などの土層改良などの土地改良を一括している。農業用水の開発・保全,農地の開発・改良・保全,農村整備など対象とする範囲は広く,農業土木事業は有史以来行われ続けてきた。大学に農業土木学の講座が設けられたのは,1876年にドイツのボン大学におけるものが最初で,創始者はドゥンケルベルクF.W.Dünkelbergである。
