Chohaku Ariga

Japanese:
Chohaku Ariga
Year of death: June 29, 1737
Year of birth: 1661
A poet and scholar of poetry from the early to mid-Edo period. His pen name was Ikeisai and others. He was from Kyoto. He inherited the academic tradition of Mochizuki Nagataka and Hirama Nagamasa, and contributed to the spread of poetry studies at the Nijo family in the early Edo period. This is supported by the existence of many books on poetry studies, but Chohaku's achievement is rather in the fact that he published a series of practical books on poetry such as "Utamakura Aki no Nezame," "Shogaku Waka Shiki," and "Hama no Masago," which greatly facilitated the poetry-writing activities of beginners. These were reprinted many times throughout the Edo period and were widely used. <References> Ueno Yozo, "The Publishing Activities of Ariga Chohaku" ("Kinsei Bungei" issues 27 and 28), Kusaka Yukio, "Ariga Chohaku Nenpu-Draft" ("Gakudai Kokubun" issue 29)
