In "Systems of Kinship and Marriage in the Human Family" (1871), Morgan distinguished kinship terms into classificatory kinship terms (a form in which several kinship categories are grouped together by one name) and descriptive kinship terms (a form in which each kinship category is designated by its own name), and classified Malay-type kinship terms and Tolanian-Ghanowanian kinship terms into the former, and Aryan-Semitic kinship terms into the latter.
