Coprolite

...More recently, attempts have been made to survey populations of Japanese serows and other animals based on the number of feces they produce. In addition, fossilized human and animal feces, called coprolites, are sometimes excavated from prehistoric ruins. Attempts are being made to reconstruct the diet and distribution of plants and animals at that time by analyzing coprolites.
