Cassianus, Johannes
[Raw] 360. Dobruja
Died in 435. A monk from Marseilles and a theologian of Semi-Pelagian theology. He lived as a monk in Bethlehem and Egypt at a young age, and went to Constantinople around 399, where he was ordained a deacon by Chrysostom. He became a priest in Rome in 405. He went to Marseille in 415 and founded the monastery of St. Victor there, and also a convent for women there. He was a key figure in spreading Eastern monasticism to the West. His writings on monastic life and institutions had a great influence on the Christian world for several centuries. Theologically, he wrote De incarnatione Domini (On the Incarnation of the Lord) and took a Semi-Pelagian position, believing that humans could obtain God's grace to a certain extent through their own efforts (→ Controversy over Grace). His main work is De institutis coenobiorum (Institution of Monastics).
