A mountain range that runs down the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra from the Aceh region in the north to the south. It is accompanied by volcanic activity and has many high peaks, including Mount Kerinci. However, plateaus and lakes are scattered between the mountains, and the fertile Minangkabau Plateau in the center is the most densely populated area in Sumatra.
