In his research on telegraphy, he invented the magnetic needle telegraph with William Fothegill Cooke (1806-79) and conducted an experiment on undersea telegraphy in 1844. In 1843, he invented the variable resistor to verify Ohm's law, and popularized the Wheatstone bridge invented by Samuel Hunter Christie (1784-1865). …
