An island off the southeast coast of New Guinea. Part of Papua New Guinea. Barrier reefs are widely distributed around the volcanic islands of Tagura, Misima, and Loseru. The inhabitants are Papuans. Torres arrived in 1606. In the late 18th century, the French arrived and named the island after Louis XV. In 1942, the Battle of the Coral Sea took place near Misima Island. Approximately 1,800 km2 .
