An island off the southeast coast of New Guinea. Part of Papua New Guinea. Barrier reefs are widely distributed around the volcanic islands of Tagura, Misima, and Loseru. The inhabitants are Papuans. Torres arrived in 1606. In the late 18th century, the French arrived and named the island after Louis XV. In 1942, the Battle of the Coral Sea took place near Misima Island. Approximately 1,800 ^km2 . Population: 22,300 (1995).

ニューギニア島南東沖合の島。パプア・ニューギニアに所属。タグラ，ミシマ，ロセルなどの火山島を主に周辺に広く堡礁が分布する。住民はパプア人。1606年トレスが来航。18世紀後半フランス人が来航，ルイ15世にちなんで命名。1942年にミシマ島付近で珊瑚海海戦が行われた。約1800km²。２万2300人（1995）。
