The last king of Sparta (reigned 207-192 BCE). Son of Demaratus. Implemented the reform plan of Cleomenes III and enacted new legislation. He confiscated the property of the propertied classes, freed slaves, and sought to establish equality. After 205 BCE, in the midst of the difficulties of Rome's expansion into the East and the fall of Macedonia, he expanded his influence throughout Greece while fighting against Philopoemen, a general of the Achaean League, but was eventually defeated and assassinated, and Sparta was occupied by the Aetolian League.
