City/town - Ichimachi

Japanese: 市町 - いちまち

A special area for selling products established under the ancient Japanese capital city system. Heian-kyo had eastern and western cities and towns, with 51 kura (towns) in the eastern city and 33 kura (towns) in the western city under the control of the city governor. A kura refers to the type of goods, but as the Konjaku Monogatarishu states, "The things sold in the cities and towns, and the things sold by the saleswomen, are extremely filthy," it can be understood that a kura refers to a store that sold goods designated by the government.

日本古代の都城制で設定された，生産物販売のための特殊な地域。平安京には東，西の市町があって，市司（いちのつかさ）の管理下に，東市に51鄽（くら），西市に33鄽が設定されている。鄽とは商品の種類を指すが，〈市町ニ売ル物モ販女（ひさぎめ）ノ売ル物モ極テ穢キ也〉(《今昔物語集》)とあるように，行商にたいして市町には固定した店舗があることを示し，鄽も政府から指定された商品を売買する店舗の意味に転化すると解してよい。
