Bonnemaisonia hamifera Hariot

Japanese: カギノリ(鉤海苔) - カギノリ(英語表記)Bonnemaisonia hamifera Hariot
Bonnemaisonia hamifera Hariot
This beautiful red alga (illustration) of the Ploceaceae family has a hook-like attachment organ at the tip of its body, which it uses to entangle itself with other seaweeds as it grows. The body has a main axis 1.5 to 2 mm in diameter, and many large and small branches extend in all directions. Some of the ends of the branches are bent into hooks, but most are thin and soft like hair, giving the whole plant a bushy appearance. It is known to be distributed in northern Europe, the Pacific coast of the United States, and the waters off Japan, and in Japan it grows from near the low tide line to the bathyal zone along the coasts of all areas except Hokkaido and the Ryukyu Islands.
