Heterothermy

…Some small animals, such as hummingbirds, bats, and rodents, can lose as much as 10°C or more of body temperature while resting, resulting in a state of torpor. This phenomenon of body temperature fluctuating beyond the normal range is called heterothermy. Smaller animals have a greater ratio of surface area to volume, so when the ectotherm is low, they lose more heat from their body surface, and therefore produce more heat per unit weight to maintain body temperature than larger animals.
