A clan of lower-ranking military officers of the nobility from the 10th century onwards. They played active roles as chamberlains in the Konoefu and attendants to the In and Sekkanke families. A chamberlain was a samurai of the nobility who accompanied nobles with bows and arrows and acted as guards. Their relationship with the Shimotsukeno clan of the pre-Taika period is unclear. The Shimotsukeno clan first appeared in history as chamberlains and attendants from the 10th century, but their ties with the Sekkanke family strengthened especially from the time of Fujiwara no Michinaga, and as their family members they played an important role in the family's domestic institutions. As attendants and guards, they were skilled in horse riding and falconry, and also good at bugaku and cooking, since they attended nobles on a daily basis.
