A river that originates in the Kolyma Mountains in northeastern Siberia, Russia, flows north and empties into the East Siberian Sea. It is 2,129 km long. It freezes over from early October to the end of May. There are deposits of limestone and gold dust in the middle reaches of the river. The plains along the upper reaches of the river, as well as the group of camps that existed there, are also called Kolyma. This camp was first built in 1932 for ordinary prisoners, and from 1937 onwards it became a representative camp for victims of the Great Purge. Prisoners were forced to work in harsh natural conditions, and in 1938 more than 40,000 were shot to death. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
