…洞穴（どうけつ）ともいう。岩の中にできた地下の空間で，人間が入っていけるだけの大きさをもち，入口の長径が奥行きまたは深さより小さいもの。断面が入口のところで最大となるものは，岩陰と呼んで区別している。自然の洞窟のうちで最も数が多いのは，石灰岩の中にできる石灰洞であって，鍾乳石などの二次生成物が多く見られるので，一般に鍾乳洞と呼ばれる。石灰洞は，雨水や河川水や地下水の化学的溶食作用と物理的浸食作用とが働きあい，石灰岩内部の弱い個所を除き去った結果として形成される。…
