An official document of agreement exchanged between nations. It is established when representatives of both countries exchange official notes with the same content. The content has been used primarily for technical purposes, such as the limitation of armaments and the demarcation of territorial waters, but it is also used as an international agreement document to complement a major treaty, such as the Yoshida-Acheson Exchange of Notes (September 1951) accompanying the Japan-US Security Treaty. It is usually established by signature alone. [Sakutaro Tsutsugi] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
