...In the 1960s, Charles Keeping and Brian L. Wildsmith showed stunningly brilliant and original styles, while the hotheaded and boisterous Raymond Briggs, John Burningham and Hellen Oxenbury, each with their own comical style, appeared and brought a breath of fresh air.

Germany had an early example of illustrated books by Ludwig Richter (1803-84) for the Bechstein and Grimm Brothers, which had a folksy appeal, and other works that had a worldwide impact included the poet W. Busch's comic picture book "Max and Moritz" (1865) and Heinrich Hoffmann's (1809-94) "Brush Peter" (1848), which was full of extremely practical lessons for daily life. This was a time when cheap German lithograph printing was flooding the world market.
