In the accompanying translation notes, he mentions the difficulties he faced in coming up with translations, and states that he follows the existing translations for words such as consciousness. Shortly thereafter, Tetsujiro Inoue and others published the Vocabulary of Philosophy (1881), which uses the term Consciousness, and it is known that this word became established as a term in philosophy, psychology, and other fields around this time. The English word consciousness is derived from the Latin conscius, which is made up of the prefix cum and the past participle of scire (to know). …
