Jurin-in Temple

Japanese: 十輪院 - じゅうりんいん
Jurin-in Temple

This Shingon Daigo temple is located in Jurin-in-cho, Nara City. Its name is Uhozan. Its principal image is a stone Jizo Bodhisattva. According to temple legend, it was founded by Asano Nakai at the request of Emperor Gensho, and is said to be a sub-temple of Gangoji. It takes its name from the Jizo Jyurin Sutra, and the eighth chapter of the Shasekishu (Collection of Shaseki) (1283) by Muju Hoshi states that the temple was a place of Jizo worship. During the Edo period, the temple was granted 50 koku of land. Within the temple grounds are the main hall (national treasure) and south gate (national important cultural property) from the Kamakura period, as well as the Miei-do hall (prefectural cultural property) from the late Muromachi period. The stone statue of Jizo Bodhisattva, the wooden statue of Fudo Myo-o and the two standing children are designated as important cultural properties of Japan. There are also stone carvings and stone Buddha statues throughout the garden. The Jizo-e ceremony is held on July 23rd and 24th.
