Ukishima Maru Incident - Ukishima Maru Incident
On August 24, 1945, just after Japan's defeat in the war, the 4,700-ton naval ship Ukishima Maru exploded and sank. The ship, carrying about 4,000 Koreans living in Japan, including those who had been forcibly taken to Japan during World War II and forced to work in Japan, and their families, departed from Ominato Port in Aomori Prefecture on August 22 and was heading to Busan Port when it exploded and sank while attempting to stop at Maizuru Port due to an order from the US military to stop. Over 500 people were killed and several thousand missing. The cause of the incident is unknown, with some stating that the ship had come into contact with a mine, and others that a naval officer, fearing retaliation, blew it up and sank it. The plaintiffs lost a lawsuit filed by survivors and their families seeking compensation from the government in 2004 at the Supreme Court.
