It was published by the draughtsman Charles Philipon (1806-62), who had already founded the political satire weekly La Caricature in 1830, and featured cartoons drawn by such excellent draughtsmen as Granville, Daumier, Gavarni, and Cham (1819-79). During the July Monarchy in particular, it was subject to censorship many times in the campaign against Louis Philippe, and contributed to creating public opinion for the February Revolution (1848). …

…As a boy, he studied painting and lithography while working to make a living. He established his reputation as a lithographer in a style similar to that of Nicolas Toussaint Charlet (1792-1845), Charles-Joseph Traviès (1804-59), and Achille Deveria (1805-59), working on the satirical magazines Caricature and Charivari, edited by Charles Philipon (1804-62), who likened Louis Philippe to a pear. His turning point came with Gargantua (1830), which portrayed the pear-shaped king as a greedy giant, for which he was imprisoned for six months and fined. …
