Consideration of the wide benefit of domestic production - Kouekikokusanko

A book on agriculture. Written by Okura Nagatsune. It is the final culmination of his life. It consists of eight volumes, and was published in 1859 (Ansei 6). However, the first and second volumes were published as "Kokusanko" (Thoughts on Domestic Products) in 1842 (Tenpo 13), and the writing of the entire work was completed in 1844 (Koka 1). In the first volume, after a general discussion encouraging domestic (specialty) products, there are explanations of over 30 specialties, including paper and kozo, and descriptions of their processing. The second volume covers cedar, cypress, pine and sugar, the third volume covers rushes and velvet, the fourth volume covers mountain yam, bracken and persimmon, the fifth volume covers soy sauce, kerosene, wax cotton and sericulture, and the sixth volume introduces how to make dolls, as local specialties are not limited to crops. Seaweed and tea are also covered here. The seventh volume is mainly about weaving, but also includes information on beekeeping. The eighth volume focuses on training fruit trees. Okura Nagatsune's explanations are based on his own experiences and are extremely specific. The illustrations are beautiful, and the book is said to be one of the two great agricultural books of the Edo period, along with Miyazaki Yasusada's "Complete Book of Agriculture."
