Peneplain - Junheigen (English spelling)

In the theory of erosion cycle, a series of flat surfaces formed in the final stage of a river cycle, also called a final landform. This term was first used by American geographer and geologist W.M. Davis, who wrote in his book Geographical Cycle (1895): "A series of nearly flat surfaces, formed without much reference to the texture of the rock layers, influenced only by the proximity of the erosion base, must characterize the final stage of an undisturbed river cycle." In this case, the expression "almost flat" is not quantitatively described, but later expressed as "a surface with enough undulations in any direction to allow a horse to trot or an automobile to drive in high gear."

The term peneplain was invented by Davis, but its concept was based on the earlier American school of thought. In other words, the roots of the concept of peneplain go back to American geomorphology pioneers JW Powell and CE Dutton. Powell introduced the concept of basal level into geomorphology because the land surface in arid regions does not erode to below sea level. Dutton gave more precise content to the concept of basal level, and described the basis for Davis's new idea as follows: "The land surface of all regions is eroded so as to fall toward the basal level. If the erosion period continues for a long time, the land surfaces will be eroded one after another until they finally fall to a level close to the basal level."

It is said that typical peneplains are difficult to develop in areas that belong to orogenic belts, such as the Japanese archipelago. The Brazilian Plateau, the Liaodong peneplain located south of northeastern China, and the Lelang peneplain west of North Korea are considered to be good examples of this type of topography. The formation of peneplains according to the reincarnation theory presupposes that ground movement is stationary or slow after the original topography is formed, or that sea levels rise by the amount of ground uplift. Therefore, the conditions for their formation are found in areas that have been subject to land-building activity over a long geological period. Research into the mechanism of peneplain formation remains to be done in orogenic belts with significant ground uplift, arid regions, cold regions, and regions that have experienced frequent climate changes and changes in the pattern of ground movement.

侵食輪廻説(しんしょくりんねせつ)において、河食輪廻の最終期に形成される一連の平らな地表で、終地形ともいう。この術語は、アメリカの地理学者・地質学者であったW・M・デービスによって初めて使用されたもので、彼の著書『地理学（的）輪廻』Geographical Cycle（1895）によると、次のように記されている。「岩層の組織にあまり関係なく、侵食基準面に近接していることだけに影響されて形成された、一連のほとんど平らな地表面は、中途で乱（中絶）されない河食輪廻の最終期を特色づけるに相違ない」。この場合ほとんど「平らな」という表現は、定量的に記述されていないが、「どの方向にも、乗馬でトロットでき、自動車ではハイギヤで走行できるほどの起伏」であるという定義を後日表している。

　準平原の術語はデービスが創案したものであるが、その着想はそれ以前のアメリカ学派の成果を踏まえている。すなわち、準平原の概念の根底そのものは、アメリカの地形学のパイオニアであったパウエルJ. W. PowellやダットンC. E. Duttonなどにさかのぼる。パウエルは、乾燥地域の地表は海面下まで侵食されないことから、侵食基準面の概念を地形学に導入した。ダットンは侵食基準面の概念に、より正確な内容を与え、デービスが新しい発想を案出する素地を次のように記述している。すなわち「すべての地域の地表は、侵食基準面に向かって低下するように侵食されている。もし侵食期が長く続くならば、それらの地表面は順次侵食され、最終的には基準面に近い位置まで低下する」というものである。

　日本列島のように造山帯に属する所には、典型的な準平原は発達しがたいといわれている。ブラジル高原、中国東北部の南に位置する遼東(りょうとう)準平原、北朝鮮西方の楽浪(らくろう)準平原などは、この地形の好例とされている。輪廻説による準平原の形成は、原地形が形成されてから地盤運動が静止・緩慢であること、または地盤の隆起量だけ海面が上昇することなどを前提としている。したがって、長い地質時代にわたって造陸運動を受けた地域にその形成可能条件がある。地盤の隆起が著しい造山帯や乾燥地域や寒冷地域、気候変動や地盤運動の様式変化がたびたび繰り返された地域などでは、準平原の形成機構の研究は、今後に残されている。
