1530‐63 He was from Sarlat, a town in central France. After studying law in Orléans, he became a canon at the Supreme Court of Bordeaux in 1554, and in 1557 he became friends with Montaigne, who had taken up his post as his colleague. He was renowned for his scholarship and insight, but died of an epidemic. In 1571, Montaigne published his poetry and translations of Xenophon and Plutarch. He also wrote On Voluntary Serfdom, a work from his youth, which argues that tyrants continue to exist because the people submit of their own accord, but there is debate as to whether this is a general theory based on material obtained from ancient writers, or whether it was based on a real-life subject.
