Chinese playwright and director. Born in Wujin County (Jiangsu Province). Courtesy name Bojun. Graduated from Tsinghua University in 1916, he studied theater and literature at Harvard University. Returning to China in 1922, he wrote Zhao Yan Wang, which he directed and received favorable reviews. He then taught English literature at various universities, while also participating in Ouyang Yuqian's Drama Association and Tian Han's Southern Country Association, where he was active in directing and translating. Later, he founded the Fudan Drama Association and directed China's first talkie film. In 1930, he joined the Left Writers League and wrote a trilogy set in rural areas: Wukui Bridge (1930), Fragrant Rice (1931), and Qinglongtan (1932). During the war of resistance against Japan, he toured various regions as the head of a theater rescue team, and after liberation, he held important positions such as director of the Foreign Cultural Liaison Bureau, and made an effort to conclude cultural agreements with Eastern European countries. He left a significant mark as one of the first people in China to major in theater. His books include "Running for Myself" (36), "The Flying General" (37), and "The Introduction to Modern Drama" (47).

中国の劇作家，演出家。武進県 (江蘇省) の人。字は伯駿。 1916年清華大学を卒業，ハーバード大学に留学して演劇，文学を学んだ。 22年帰国，『趙閻 (ちょうえん) 王』を書き，みずから演出して好評を得た。その後，各地の大学で英文学の教授をしながら，欧陽予倩の「戯劇協社」，田漢の「南国社」などに参加して演出，翻訳に活動，のちみずから「復旦劇社」を組織，また映画監督として中国最初のトーキー映画を製作した。 30年左翼作家連盟に参加，『五奎橋』 (1930) ，『香稲米』 (31) ，『青竜潭』 (32) の農村を舞台とする3部作を書いた。抗日戦争中は救亡演劇隊長として各地区を巡回，解放後は対外文化連絡局長などの要職にあり，東ヨーロッパ諸国と文化協定を結ぶことに尽力。中国において，本格的に演劇を専攻した最初の一人として，大きな足跡を残した。著書『走私』 (36) ，『飛将軍』 (37) ，『現代戯劇導論』 (47) 。
