衵 - Akome

Japanese: 衵 - あこめ

Formal clothing for male nobles in the Heian period. Worn between the undergarment and hitoe when wearing sokutai. The collar is hanging, with wide sleeves, and in winter the outer layer is twill and the inner layer is plain silk. In summer there is no lining. The color is mainly red, and the patterns include diamonds and small hollyhocks. In later times it was often omitted from the composition of sokutai. It was also called the inner layer of court ladies' costumes, and was worn as everyday clothing by young girls. The fabrics were twill, plain silk, thin fabric, etc., and the colors and patterns were not fixed.

平安時代の公家男子の礼服。束帯(そくたい)のとき下襲(したがさね)と単(ひとえ)の間に着る。衿(えり)は垂領(たりくび)，広袖で，冬は表綾(あや)，裏平絹(ひらぎぬ)，夏は裏がなく，紅色が主で，文様は菱小葵(あおい)などがある。後世は多く束帯構成より省略する。また女房装束の中着のこともいい，童女の常着にもされた。地は綾，平絹，薄物などがあり，色目は不定，文様も自由であった。
