… [Matsunaga Midori]
【art】
In 1972, relics from the Copper Age, thought to precede the Sumerian civilization, were discovered in Varna, drawing attention to the advanced nature of Bulgaria in the 4th millennium BC. Later, the Thracians who lived in this area founded Greek colonies on the Black Sea coast, including Odessos (now Varna) and Mesembria (now Nesebar), and there are first-class artifacts from that time, such as the ceiling paintings in the tomb of Kazanlâk (around 300 BC), which are reminiscent of ancient Greek wall paintings now lost, and the metalwork excavated in Panagjurište (3rd century BC). After 46, Thrace and Moesia became provinces of the Roman Empire, and new Roman cities such as Serdica (now Sofia) were built, but the tombs of Pomorie, which date back to the late Roman period, follow the Thracian traditions, although they are based on Roman architectural techniques.
